Abstract: Experimental data are presented for flow in compound channels with symmetrically converging floodplains. In such a configuration, a mass transfer due to nonprismaticity is observed, but with a flow behaviour less complex than in meandering compound channels. The momentum transfer generated by the mass transfer is estimated in terms of additional head loss. It is governed mainly by geometrical parameters and is proportional to the friction slope, independently of the discharge value. The new data are used for a preliminary improved validation of the Exchange Discharge Model that accounts for momentum transfer in both prismatic and non-prismatic compound channels.
