Abstract: The paper includes a study of increasing the output of existing pow er plants. By exchanging the existing runner in the turbine with a new runner with increased flow and output, cavitation may occur. The paper gives an analysis of the design parameters and the limitation of the increase in output of Francis turbines, which is the most commonly used turbine type. When the flow in the powerplant is increased the increased velocity in the conduit system often leads to problems with the governing stability of the hydro-pow erplant. One solution is increasing the cross sections of the conduit system (tunnels and penstocks). However, by means of a pressure feedback system of the governor, stability can be obtained and thus save the cost of increasing the cross sections of the conduits. The paper gives a brief description of t he pressure feedback system with illustration by means of a block diagram.
