Abstract: The utilization of low head hydro power today is based on tubular turbines with increasing specific speed. The high amount of kinetic fluid energy in this kind of turbines emphasizes the importance of flow deceleration downstream the runner to recover the corresponding velocity head. Theoretical and experimental inve-stigations have shown that there is a usable flow deceleration even downstream the draft tube exit. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on how to optimize this process of flow deceleration in the tailwater.
