Abstract: The paper describes the natural water flow regime of the Volga River and its changes after construction of a chain of hydrodevelopments. Information is given on the trends in catches of sturgeon and fine-meshnet fish from 1913 until 1990. The paper reviews the requirements set by ichthyologists for the regime of flows and water stages to be maintained upstream and downstream of the dams and in the lower unregulated reaches of the Volga. It outlines approaches and corrective measures to mitigate conflicts between water users.
