Abstract: Two laboratory investigations on rectangular pump sumps with multiple vertical pumps were conducted, one with a specific practical application in mind and another with more generic applications in mind. In the first study hydraulic modeling of an as-designed rectangular intake which consisted of seven pumps was carried out. The purpose of this model study was to identify any undesirable features of the intake design and to modify the layout, if necessary, in order to provide hydraulically acceptable pump-approach flows to individual pumps. The second study, motivated by the first one, was a generic study of flow problems associated with a rectangular pump sump with multiple pumps.
