Abstract: In this paper we summarize recent work on the nonlinear dynamics of the mobile gates proposed for protecting Venice City from storm tides. Assuming the equilibrium position of the gates to be vertical and all gates are hinged on the common axis spanning an inlet, we outline the theory for subharmonic resonance of the gates under the attack of incident waves. The basis of the theory is that the system coupling the mobile gates and the surrounding water, admits natural modes with certain eigenfrequencies. These mode have the special features that their energy is trapped to the vicinity of the gates and can only be excited by a nonlinear mechanism. The derivation of the nonlinear equation governing the envelope of gate oxcillations is then sketched. Physical implications are deduced. In particular the gate response to monocromatic and narrow banded seas are discussed. Experimental confirmation is also presented.
