Abstract: Scour at bridge crossings is a well-recognized cause of bridge failure. Evaluation of bridges for scour susceptibility and design of countermeasures is necessary to ensure safe bridges and minimize the disruption of traffic due to bridge closure. Current scour evaluation methods are based primarily on techniques derived from idealized small-scale laboratory physical model investigations that consider a limited number of parameters known to affect scour processes. These methods are considered as being conservative under most conditions although only limited verification has been conducted. This paper summarizes a study (Parola et al. 1997) sponsored by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) to identify deficiencies in the current state-of-knowledge and practice and to develop a strategic plan for scour research.
