Abstract: While qualitative analysis techniques provide insight on potential channel instability problems, quantitative techniques may be necessary to adequately address questions of vertical stability of the streambed, lateral (planform) stability of the stream channel, and the effects of channel instability on countermeasures. This paper surveys standard FHWA publications for guidance on these issues and presents additional techniques readily available in the technical literature.
