Abstract: A new procedure for estimating the extent of pier scour into erodible rock and other resistant materials based on the Erodibility Index Method (Annandale, 1995) has been proposed by Smith and Annandale (1995). Application of the Erodibility Index Method to bridge scour requires techniques for estimating stream power at the base of bridge piers. This paper presents preliminary relationships between stream power and scour derived from ongoing experiments at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center.
