Abstract: A laboratory study of the stability of riprap protective layers under mobile-bed conditions is reported. Emphasis is given to the effect on riprap disintegration of the placement level of the riprap layer. The results indicate that the deeper the initial level of the riprap layer, the lesser the depth of local scour at the pier, i.e. the better the protection afforded. The stability of the riprap decreases also with increasing flow velocity. Mechanisms of riprap disintegration are discussed also.
