Abstract: A variety of control systems have been used in canal operation. However, some of the most common problems found in their application are not directly associated with the control algorithm itself. The main problems are the selection of the control parameters and the reliability/safety of the control system. A proportional-integral control algorithm is used for level regulation. The use of the flow rate as a control variable or the introduction of a factor considering the head variations through the gate reduces the control parameter adjustments required to maintain the control performance. A supervision system is proposed to monitor the control equipment and process. The slide gate is provided with analog and digital devices to detect abnormal operation conditions. The fault detection and diagnosis techniques used are based on process knowledge. This paper describes the initial steps in the development of a reliable safe control supervisory system for a laboratory slide gate.
