Abstract: The Okavango River, in Angola, Namibia, and Botswana is important for its wilderness environment and resources for human development. The river terminates in an inland delta, providing perennial wetland habitat within the Kalahari desert. This is one of the few remaining regions in southern Africa capable of sustaining populations of large mammals and reptiles. Researchers are aware both that human development threatens the present ecosystem and that, even outside of human influence, this river is prone to rapid, significant ecological changes.
