Abstract: The incoming flood approaching the reservoir that has al r eady reached its Ful I Reservoir Leve I has always been enforcing the operat ion of spi I Iway to its crit ical stage. Under such. circumstances, the dam authorit ies have no other opt ion than to let out total incoming f lood over the spil Iway to avoid enchrochment on free board. In the present paper, a hypothesis is put-forth which suggest to take more water from the reservoir in advance ti I approaching floods are increasing. Once the f lood hydrog raptreaches the point of contraflexture, the spil Iway gates aroperated with desired closing rate. This results not only ireducing the flood intensity to the des ired one but also assures the full reservoir storage. The control of discharge achieved has been designated with a new term M. J. D. (Monitered Joint Discharge)
