Abstract: The benefits of flexible agricultural water deliveries are frequently discussed in terms of potential cost and water savings. Westlands Water District, a 600,000 acre (240,000 ha) agricultural district in the San Joaquin Valley of California, has operated a limited rate arranged distribution system for thirty years. The economic and water efficiency benefits of their system are readily apparent, but there are also some lessons which can be learned from Westlands' operations experience and, perhaps, incorporated into future new distribution system or rehabilitation designs.
