Abstract: It is shown that all irrigation methods have higher potential efficiencies and uniformities than are commonly obtained in the field. When the manager has control of the water supply rate and duration (i.e., flexible scheduling), higher values can usually be economically attained. Such control can alleviate or eliminate many subsurface drainage and salinity problems. Surface runoff can be more easily controlled by the manager and can be essentially eliminated by return flow systems.
