Abstract: Model selection is usually straightforward if site conditions are known and the purpose and tolerances of the study understood. However, there are occasions when the choice is not so clear. At two sites in Washington State, we have applied both one-and two-dimensional models to examine hydraulic aspect of bridge scour and bank stabilization. Comparisons of the model applications illustrate their differences and provide insight into the basis for model selection. We also we consider whether neglected' physical processes can be estimated from the results of one-dimensional models, and how useful these calculations might be.
