Abstract: The spreading of passive pollutants in rivers is analyzed from the viewpoint of the statistical analysis of concentration distributions. Rivers with irregular cross-sections are taken into account. The temporal statistical moments for the pollutant concentration time distributions were found for the cases of longitudinal dispersion in rivers in which storage zones play an important role. The theoretically obtained statistical moments were found to agree well with the experimental results. In contrast to the literature results the possible situation of the growth of skewness coefficient with distance from the release point was predicted.
