Abstract: The present paper describes a Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) technique adapted by the authors for providing whole-field diagnostic in flows with suspended alluvial sand. The PTV configuration and operation are summarized here along with selected measurements to illustrate the capabilities of the technique. Instantaneous vector fields were separately measured for liquid and sediment in a sediment-laden jet. Along with these, the potential of PTV to provide particle concentration and size for the suspended fraction of the flow is also revealed. These measurements show that PTV is a powerful instrument which can shed light on important issues in sediment-laden flows and, in a broader perspective, on the liquid-particle interaction.
