Abstract: The United States Environmental Protection Agency distributes the Cornell Mixing Zone Model (CORMIX) and PLUMES Roberts, Snyder, and Baumgartner (RSB) and Updated Merge (UM) initial dilution models for designing and assessing aquatic multiport diffusers. CORMIX and RSB are generally recommended for cases in which the current is parallel to the diffuser axis. However, where dilutions at specific locations, e.g., mixing zone boundaries, are required, UM provides a convenient way to obtain estimates. A technique is developed to adapt UM to some cases involving merging plumes in parallel currents. An example demonstrates the technique.
