Abstract: The River Oster in Germany used to be a highly polluted and channelized water course. As part of a research project it was substantially modified between 1993 and 1995 to a more natural state by hydraulic engineering measures. A continuous long term monitoring program was inaugurated to study improvements in water ecology and quality.
