Abstract: There is an emerging trend toward more and larger-scale restoration projects in rivers and streams around the world. Hydraulic engineers are involved in many of these projects including restoration-related activities or restoration- impacting activities, such as: habitat enhancement structures, riverbank soil plant bio-engineering for erosion control, and flood control channel programs Some of the underlying ecosystem needs from such projects are to enhance ecosystem biodiversity and ecosystem sustainability. There is a need to establish appropriate sedimentation engineering techniques that will provide a sound basis for linking (a) channel morphology and the sediment regime with (b) ecological processes. Such linkages are essential to the success of restoration efforts. The Task Committee on Sedimentation Engineering for River Restoration was established by the ASCE Sedimentation Committee to define the sedimentation engineering features of the restoration efforts.
