Abstract: In order to stop erosion and to raise the bed of the River Danube the project "Blochinger Sandwinkel" was developed. It is a project of the country of Baden-Wurttemberg and consists in re-opened bends of the former Danube that were connected with the existing river-channel. In addition to practical experiences dealing with larger restoration projects, the investigations resulted in a detailed picture of mass movements and in a first verification of existing formulas to estimate the stability of armour layers. The formulas of Meyer-Peter and Muller (1949), Schoberl (1979,1991,1992), Gessler (1965) and Gunter (1971), Parker and Klingeman (1982) and Chin (1985) were used to determine river bed stability.
