Abstract: A research program has been developed and implemented to investigate the causes of population declines of chinook salmon in the Tuolumne River of California's central valley. Major factors influencing the production of juvenile salmon appear to be gravel quantity and quality; factors controlling the survival of juveniles appear to be predation by non-native fish and mortality associated with water exports in the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta. Proposed management strategies to increase the salmon population are described.
