Abstract: Sediment transport patterns were simulated by a multi-layer finite element sediment-water interaction model around a breakwater planned to build for the protection of a cargo terminal in Hong Kong harbor. The model has an interactive multi-layer arrangement in the vertical domain and a finite element structure in the horizontal coordinates. Simulations of the flow field and the sediment field were first performed for the major part of coastal waters in Hong Kong with average element sizes of about 1 km × 1 km. The simulated results were then employed as boundary conditions for a smaller area with refined elements of 25 m × 25 m focusing on the breakwater region. The simulation revealed that higher suspended sediment load occurred at the south-west corner of the breakwater during tidal flooding and ebbing periods.
