Abstract: Bed configuration with large sand bars which had been fixed for a long time in the estuary of a small river named Shigenobu in Matsuyama city in Japan changed intensively by several large floods which occurred successively in a short period in 1993. This two-dimensional morphological change of the river bed is numerically simulated with the finite difference method for the two-dimensional shallow water equations and continuity equation of sediment discharge. The numerical method is proved to be applicable for the simulation of two-dimensional bed variation in an estuary with sand bars partially submerged depending on flow discharges, if the boundary conditions of water and sediment discharges are given properly.
