Abstract: The mechanisms for morphological river changes are different if their bottom is gravelled or sandy. For sand-bed river's in equilibrium, the thinner is the grain size, the higher is the sediment discharge. The bed load is usually negligible and the notion of transport threshold is not relevant. The dynamics of this kind of river is linked to the development of large-scale turbulence in harmony with the development of bed forms during sediment transport. The energy losses due to the bed forms are the limiting factors of sediment transport. Thus sand-bed rivers can reach a dynamic stability.
