Abstract: The evaluation of sediment dynamics at river diversions is a complex problem. The percentage of suspended load diverted is not necessarily proportional to the flow. Secondary currents, which are the result of channel geometry, also impact the percentage of the sediment diverted. In addition, sediment characteristics impact the percentage of sediment diverted. Analytical and numerical methods are available to evaluate the problem. This paper provides a brief review of analytical approaches. The numerical model CH3D-SED is presented as an alternative to the analytical approach. A case study is presented in which the model is applied to the Head of Passes region of the Mississippi River. At Head of Passes, the Mississippi River has three major distributaries. Predictions are made on the percentage of sediment diverted in each distributary.
