Abstract: The wave height of alternate bars formed on non-uniform sediment beds is smaller than that on uniform sediment beds. Longitudinal and transverse sediment sorting is responsible for those differences. A hydraulic jump forms at the downstream area of bar crests depending on hydraulic conditions and governs the bed shear stress distribution. Coarser particles tend to be deposited at the most downstream area of bar crests and are devoted to the bar migration. Finer particles are transported from the crests to the downstream area and tend to deposit in the troughs where the bed shear stress is smaller.
