Abstract: One of most discussed aspects in stable alluvial channel design is the estimation of the lateral dimensions. There are several criteria to approach the problem, i.e.: purely empirical methods, mechanistic concepts, and energy-based procedures, but none of them is widely accepted to date. The essential reasons of this situation are related with the great quantity of variables to take into account, and a lack of knowledge of some physical processes influencing channel formation and maintenance.
