Abstract: The integration (or the lack of integration) of research approaches and applications is discussed through examples from the daily practice of fluvial hydraulics. This issue is quite important in a period in which hydraulic research is conducted mainly through informatics and when researchers would tend to loose contact with the real environment. It was not the purpose to provide solutions, rather to open a debate that is urgently needed, especially regarding organization and funding of hydraulic research and about education in hydraulics.
