Abstract: In the design of powerhouse projects for hydro power schemes, increasing importance is attached to the hydraulic design of penstock manifold systems. The purpose of hydraulic optimation is in this case to minimise the system's energy losses. Especialy the design of manifolds for pumped storage systems-flow in both direction-is of main interesst. Determina- tion of such losses has practically mostly been based on scale model tests. A physical model-a pipe distribution for two turbines-for measuring of head losses was constructed. The numerical model based on the method of finite volume elements was applied on the same model. As comparison of the results from the numerical model with the values measured on the physical model showed good agreement, the use of a numerical model of this kind can be regarded as an important and valuable supplement to the studies on a physical model, as this allows easy variation of model geometry for the study of alternative projects.
