Abstract: The water circulation in the Red Sea basin is governed by the seasonal variations of wind field, density gradients and intensity of flow exchange between the basin and the Gulf of Aden at its southern exit (Fig.1). The substantial difference in salinity and temperature fields between the northern and southern regions of the basin produces results in density currents as well as stratification along the flow depth. The circulation pattern is further complicated by the irregularity of the coastal configuration and bottom topography. While existing studies [1,3,4,6] into the Red Sea circulation have mainly focused on the mechanisms of deep water formation and its residence time, little attention is given to the simulation of flow exchange mechanism with the Gulf of Aden and its southern exit (Fig.1).
