Abstract: Recent advances in instrumentation for gathering oceanographic data hold the promise of much improved modeling of the behavior of wastewater released from outfalls into coastal waters. Particularly useful are Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP's) and thermistor strings which allow continuous measurement of both velocity and density stratification over the water column. The use of such instruments provides exciting opportunities for improved modeling in addition to posing new challenges to the modeler in the effective use of the huge amounts of data which can be gathered.
