Abstract: Shallow coastal reefs are of special interest for providing recreational facilities and for construction of sea defence structures and marinas. It was expected in the past that a larger percentage of incident short waves will break at the seaward edge of the reef and hence the wave activities on the reef top will be weaker, providing natural protection to the area. Despite this fact, it has been identified at several occasions that the water level fluctuations are quite larger than once expected, mainly due to low frequency fluctuations of O(100s).
