Abstract: An integrated coastal management concept necessitates the interdisciplinary cooperation in the fields hydrodynamics, ecology and socio-economy. The coastal protection problem is the key term, so long as it is a must, in all. considerations. Therefore the coastal engineer has to overtake the co-ordination between the various fields based upon own engineering know-how and the understanding of the other disciplines. For the set-up of a management concept strategic research and conceptual inputs are still necessary. This must also include the definition of future priorities and needs in coastal engineering, especially in view of climatic changes and their possible effects. For the development of reliable strategies and concepts real life conditions, case studies, are useful in order to define common goals and methods for assessment as basis for decisions by state and society. The selection of the case study "Island SyltNorth Sea" allows to ilustrate how the conflicting fields coastal protection, tourism and natural preservation partly harmonize and partly counteract. It is therefore a typical example to develop realistic research needs and to propose conceptual approaches for an integrated coastal management concept.
