Abstract: Local scour sometimes arises on a sand bed under the sea when cooling water is discharged from submerged outlets in power plants. Since this local scour may lead to the destruction of coastal structures, it is necessary to develop a numerical prediction method to estimate the scoured area and its depth. In the present study, three-dimensional curvilinear coordinates are generated so that the coordinate lines can be coincident with the deformed sand bed surface, on the basis of the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation as proposed by Hirt [1]. This prediction method is applied to the results of a three-dimensional local scour experiment. From the comparison with the experimental results, it is verified that the sand bed profiles are satisfactorily predicted by the present method and that the predicted results are largely improved compared with the previous work [2] which was based on the Eulerian coordinate system.
