Abstract: The Hydraulic and geomorphic characteristics of the Nile river downstream of the High Aswan Dam (HAD) have been significantly altered by the flow conditions imposed by the Dam. Due to the change of the Nile river morphology, some navigation bottlenecks have been created along the river reaches, particularly during the period of Winter closure (low flow). The Hydraulics Research Institute (HRI) was asked to study these bottlenecks and find out the practical solution for each one. This paper describes two examples of the navigation problems which were created in the Nile river due to the consequence of its morphological changes in the reach between Aswan and Luxour. The results of the study, solutions and recommendations are presented.
