Abstract: Depth-average calculation procedures are presented for flows in rivers with complex, irregular geometry. The governing flow equations are solved with an efficient finite-volume method employing boundary-fitted grids. Steady and unsteady approaches are used to cope with the various demands of practical river engineering problems. The calculation procedures are tested by application to a mean flow situation of the River Rhine for which laboratory measurements focused on low flow regions between groynes and near the embankments are available and to a hypothetical flow situation for modelling the effects of unsteady flow in tidal rivers.
