Abstract: The use of submerged vanes for alleviating low-flow shoaling problems in rivers is discussed. The basic equations are stated and solved for a shoaling problem at a power plant water intake. It is demonstrated that the vane technique has merit as a sediment management tool that can mitigate many low-flow problems in rivers. The vanes can be laid out to develop and maintain any desired bed topography.
