Abstract: A horizontal two-dimensional model is developed in this study to simulate the hydraulic characteristics and salt water intrusion of an estuarian river. A body fitted coordinate and an ortlhogonal curvilinear coordinate system are adopted to generate grids and to reflect the irregularities of the boundaries. The governing equations include continuity, momentum and salinity convection-diffusion equations. A spilt-operator method is proposed to solve the equations. The equations are seperated into three portions, namely advection, propagation and diffusion, and solved seperately using different numerical schemes. The solutions are then combined to form the final solutions. The model is verified with the analytical solutions and the results are satisfactory.
