Abstract: In valleys with high permeable Quaternary fill (terraces dating back to the Wurm ice age), gravel production has increased to such an extent that large parts of the landscape are virtually covered with lakes. Already in the course of gravel dredging, a progressing process of colmation begins: fine sediments settle, particularly, at the bottom and along the downstream shores of the lake. As the lake ages, this sealing effect is dramatically enhanced by eutrophication (growth of algae) and anthropogenous utilization (e.g. utilization as bathing lake or fish pond etc.).
