Abstract: The main objective of a groundwater monitoring program is to obtain representative water samples as economically as possible. Groundwater sampling protocols recommend that the stagnant water in the well casing is removed to allow fresh aquifer water to flow into the well prior to sampling (Gibs & Imbrigiotta, 1990). This process is called purging. The total amount of water purged is referred to as the purge volume and varies depending on the well construction and aquifer being sampled. A typical purge volume is equivalent to three to five well volumes (Barcelona, 1985). However, the term well volume has not been clearly defined and several different interpretations are in current use.
