Implications of Soil Erosion in Southern Africa

Abstract: The erosion of the soil by rainfall, runoff and wind, results in degradation of the land surface as well as changes in morphology of river channels and reservoirs. The sensitivity of the erosion rate to land use and climatic change is demonstrated with a hydraulic computer model. Examples of problems cause by deposition of sediment in channels and reservoirs are given. An example of a hydropower reservoir which is silted up is discussed in the light of the extreme hydrology and cut-price desi gn. Further exam ples of natural river changes and estimates of rate of deposition in an inland delta are given. In particular the Okavango delta in Botswana is likely to change drastically due to deposition of sediment at the mouth and around the periphery due to different types of transport of sediment.
