Numerical Modeling of Long-Term Transport of Suspended Solids and Cadmium in a Lock-Regulated Section of the Neckar River

Abstract: A numerical model has been applied for simulation of suspended solids and cadmium transport in a lock-regulated section of Neckar River, Germany, over a period of 34 years. The model consists of one-dimensional, quasi-steady submodels of flow and transport, coupled with an one-dimensional sub-model of the sediment bed. Changes in channel morphology, calculated by the numerical model, deviates from echo-sounding survey results by 7.5% to 54.7%. With respect to present pollution of channel sediment by cadmium, the numerical simulation depicts that less polluted layers cover heavily contaminated layers. This reflects the history of pollution in the Neckar River and is in accordance with the results derived from sediment core investigation.
