Abstract: The effect of an emergency water-release from upstream dams on diluting and flushing the water pollutants of NH_3-N, that inflowed continuously into and polluted the downstream river, was examined using the data collected during the period concerned. The water releases from the upstream two dams were proven to be effective on reducing the concentration of NH_3-N in the river reach. The water release during the water-quality accident, which had not been in the reservoir operation plans, however, reduced water storage in the reservoirs by 20 %, jeoperdizing the scheduled downstream water supply. This study suggests establishing a comprehensive and optimal operation system for the reservoirs and estuary barrage during water-quality accidents in the basin.
