Abstract: The flow field around the base of a circular cylinder in super-critical flow was investigated experimentally. Dye flow visualisation, velocity measurements and pressure measurements in the plane of symmetry confirmed the existence of a horseshoe vortex at high Froude numbers. The influence of Froude number on the flow field was studied.
