Abstract: The problem of computing surface profiles which pass through the critical depth is outlined. An equation is then presented based on a control volume analysis of the flow in a channel which is able to model sub-, super-and trans-critical open channel flows. The equation is used to generate a surface profile including a hydraulic jump for a typical gradually varied flow problem.
