Abstract: Sea ice field observation is important to ensure oil/gas exploitation security in ice covered regions. The sea ice data can also be the initial conditions for sea ice numerical simulation, and be applied to investigate ice loads, ice-induced vibrations of offshore structures. The purpose of this paper is to analyze radar images quantitatively with computer image processing technique, then extract the basal characteristics of sea ice, such as ice concentration, floe size, ice velocity and ice thickness. The Radar Image Processing and Analyzing System for Sea Ice Field Observation (RIPAS SIFO) is developed based on the relative data structures and algorithms, and has been applied on the JZ20-2 Oil-Gas Platform in the Bohai Sea in the winter of 20112012. With analysis of radar images produced by the SPERRY MARINE radar, the sea ice conditions are obtained. The observed data show that this software system could extract sea ice conditions comprehensively from radar images. With further improvements, it will make great contribution to the field observation of sea ice based on radar images.
