Abstract: Ice ride-up and pile-up threaten the security of inclined offshore structures. The mechanical properties of sea ice have effect on the shape of pile-up and the angle of the climbing as the kinetic energy and the size for sea ice is large enough. On one hand, the ice temperature varies unsteadily in a complex manner, when sea ice comes from water to air during the ride-up and pile-up. Therefore, it is necessary to study the mechanism of ice ride-up and pile-up from fieldinvestigations. On the other hand, owing to the limitations of energy, size of ice, tidal conditions, and etc, it is difficult for thick ice to form hummocks. For these reasons, it is difficult for us to obtain much data of the ice climbing along beaches. Thirty hummocks, formed by 0.5 to 1.6 cm ice layers, were measured in Liaohe Estuary in the north of Liaodong Bay. The data about the angle of climbing and the shape of pile-up were analyzed. The results indicate that the climbing ice slope is affected by the slope angle. As the slope angle higher than 10°, the ride-up occurs. If the slope angle is greater than 40.0°, the ride-up stops to pile up behind the hummocks. The climbing does not continue until the sliding-down angle for the hummocks is less than 28.0°. Meanwhile, the shape of hummocks formed by 10 or 22 cm ice layers is proved to follow the same rule.
