Abstract: Vistula is the largest Polish River. In XVII and XVIII century numerous ice jams occurred on Vistula near Gdansk causing significant floods. In 1895 a direct, artificial channel was formed to facilitate discharge of Vistula to the Baltic Sea, however, there is still a danger of ice jam formation in the river mouth, which may result in water damming and flood moving in the upstream direction of the river. Such situation often occurred in winter and the action of icebreakers prevented ice jam formation. The following factors are important: water elevation in the sea, ice conditions in the river and in the Bay of Gdansk, morphology of the river outlet, wind speed and direction and river discharge. Mathematical model was developed which takes into account hydraulic, morphological and ice conditions as well as possible action of icebreakers forming icefree channel. Description of mathematical model is presented together with calculation results, their analysis and conclusions.
